MDF BOARD

Medium density fiberboard, or MDF, is a premier substrate for wood veneer. MDF’s workability, good dimensional stability, flatness, close tolerances, dent-resistance, and lack of grain-telegraphing have contributed to its wide acceptance. Good bond strength, screw-holding, and resistance to compression and warp make MDF an ideal substrate.

MDF is made in much the same manner as particleboard except that the wood is “cooked” prior to refining. During this step the wood becomes less susceptible to the influences of moisture and less brittle. During the refining step, the wood is “rubbed” apart into fiber bundles instead of being mechanically “broken” apart as in particle separators. After a binder is added, usually urea formaldehyde, the material is hot pressed, sanded, and sawed.

FAQs

What is MDF?

MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard is a man-made engineered wood sheet used as a core material for veneer. Wood fibers are combined with resin to produce a uniform substrate. MDF is denser than plywood and offers a highly uniform surface perfect for veneer lamination.

Can you use veneer with MDF?

MDF is one of our most popular core options. Our hot presses allow us to laminate all species of wood veneer to MDF cores of various thicknesses and sizes. A balancing backer ensures there is no warping.

What sizes of MDF are available?

FormWood offers MDF veneer panels in standard sizes from 4x8 to 5x12 (8x4 to 12x5 for cross-grain panels). Custom cut-to-size panels are also available giving you the most flexibility for your project.

What thicknesses of MDF are available?

We offer MDF in most standard thicknesses from 1/8” to 1-1/2”.

How much does MDF weigh?

MDF weighs roughly 3 lbs per Sqft for 3/4” thick MDF and roughly 1lb per Sqft for 1/4” thick material.

What types of MDF are available?

FormWood is able to offer various specialty MDF such as FR (fire resistant), MR (moisture resistant), NAUF (no added urea formaldehyde), FSC, and more. Connect with our team of experts to learn more about our specialty core options.
